Apply for summer internships, research positions, and competitive programs.Most deadlines are January through March — waiting means fewer opportunities.
List every current extracurricular. Identify the one or two you'll double down on for leadership and impact.Colleges can tell when a resume is five half commitments. Quality over quantity.
Register for the SAT or ACT.Book the date now — testing centers fill, and you want your first attempt early enough to schedule a second.

Research majors honestly. Start an initial college list.Write why you are drawn to each school in one sentence. If it's generic, the fit probably is too.
Schedule spring break college visits.Walking on a campus will change what you think about a college more than any ranking will.

Stage Two · Shape

Finalize a rigorous senior schedule — AP, IB, or Honors where it genuinely fits.Rigor relative to what your school offers. Admissions reads your transcript in context; they know the catalog.
Confirm those choices align with the expectations of the Top-20 schools on your list.For example for engineering, the calculus sequence matters more than taking every single AP available.

For each target school, write down deadlines, testing policies, and specific requirements.One document. School by school. Trust nothing to memory or rumor.
Note which schools offer Early Decision, Early Action, or Restrictive Early Action.ED/EA strategy is a fall decision — but the inputs for that decision are collected now.

Ask two or three teachers for letters of recommendation — before summer break.Ask the teachers who saw you think, not just the ones who gave you A's. And ask in person.
Review past supplemental essay questions from the schools on your list.Most supplements repeat year-over-year. You can start thinking about them months before the portal opens.

Brainstorm three to five real story ideas for the personal statement.Think of specific moments. "The summer I built the deck with my grandfather" is better than simply "I'm resilient."
Choose one main story. Outline the essay.The outline is the decision. Once it's right, the draft is just dictation.

Draft the personal statement.First drafts can be long and earnest. That's fine. Expect to cut later.
Create the activities list — roles, hours per week, key achievements.Write each line like it's the only thing the reader will see. Specificity over adjectives.

Revise the personal statement through two or three rounds.Between rounds, leave the draft alone for 24–48 hours. Come back with clear eyes.
Draft and edit every supplemental essay you already know about.By the first day of senior year, the essays should be finished or nearly so — leaving room for grades, activities, and ED/EA strategy.
